EDMONTON – More than 90 arts, cultural and official language programs received $6.4 million from several government programs Friday, including Edmonton’s Folk Music and Fringe festivals.

“There are scores of successful arts and cultural events put on across Alberta every year in communities large and small,” said Rona Ambrose, MP for Edmonton-Spruce Grove, speaking on behalf of the Canadian Heritage and Official Languages department. “They are big contributors to our economy. They create jobs and opportunities to thousands of talented, creative Albertans who entertain us and enrich our quality of life.”

In Edmonton, 34 arts projects and programs benefited from the funding announcement, including:

– the Edmonton Heritage Festival, which received $40,700;

– the Edmonton Folk Music Festival, which received $100,000;

– the Edmonton International Street Performers Festival, which received $85,000;

– the Fringe Theatre Festival, which received $146,000.

St. Albert’s Arden Theatre, Stony Plain’s Blueberry Bluegrass and Country Music Festival, as well as Sherwood Park’s Festival Place also received money.

In Calgary, 21 arts programs received support.

Ambrose said arts puts $46 billion into the Canadian economy and creates 630,000 jobs across Canada.
