VERNON — A major natural gas leak in Vernon has forced the evacuation of an apartment building.

The leak occurred near downtown Vernon this morning prompting the evacuation of the Ukrainian Village Apartments on 27th Avenue and 35th Street.

Officials are also asking residents who reside on 27th Avenue between and 35th Street to stay inside and close their windows and doors.

An air conditioned bus has been brought in to accommodate the affected residents.

Officials say they hope to have the leak fixed by 1 p.m.
