Assiniboine Park has put an end to what’s become a Canada Day tradition in Winnipeg, free admission to the zoo, citing safety concerns.
Officials announced Wednesday that they’ll start charging admission at the zoo on July 1st.
It’s been free every Canada Day for the last several years, and that’s made it a popular attraction — a little too popular.
About 37,000 people cram in for free on July 1st: ten times the normal number of zoo patrons: creating an overcrowding problem.
“We want to ensure our visitors have a great experience when they come to the Zoo,” said Margaret Redmond, President & CEO of the Assiniboine Park Conservancy, in a news release. “We believe this change will alleviate many of the traffic concerns and extreme line-ups people experience at the Park on Canada Day and still gives the community an opportunity to visit the Zoo free of charge at a later date.”
Instead of Canada Day, the zoo will offer free admission the weekend of September 24th and 25th.
