Firefighters quickly went into defensive mode.

The home directly adjacent was evacuated and firefighters climbed to its rooftop to help combat the thick, heavy smoke.

One neighbour told Global News she believes the owner is currently out of the country and his parents are looking after the home.

Fire platoon chief Barry Evans confirmed no one was inside the home and the owner is currently out of town.

Crews took a defensive stance because the structure was deemed to be unsafe.
