SASKATOON – Appearing calm and composed, David Woods pleaded not guilty in court on Monday as his first-degree murder trial got underway.

Woods, 51, is accused of killing his wife Dorothy Woods. The Crown told court Dorothy was deeply unsatisfied in her marriage and had intimate relationships with two other men. The Crown said she told her husband their marriage was over on Nov. 11, 2011.

The Crown told court a GPS tracking system was placed in his vehicle which helped to locate her body in a culvert south of Saskatoon near Blackstrap Lake on Jan. 4, 2012.

Dorothy Woods, 45, died from ligature strangulation with blunt force trauma to the head being a contributing factor.

The Crown told 13 jurors a video will be played showing David Woods purchasing poly wrap, rope and a hacksaw on Nov. 12, the day after his wife was last seen by friends and family.

The first person called to the stand, Saskatoon police Const. Matthew Wise, said he was asked to check on the welfare of Dorothy a few days after she was last seen.

Her disappearance sparked searches by friends and family as they looked for the missing mother of two who was well known in the roller derby community.

The Crown is expected to call 24 witnesses over the four-week long trial. It continues on Tuesday with the cross-examination of Dorothy’s brother, Lawrence Carter.
