SASKATOON – Music lovers in Saskatoon were out in full force on Saturday to celebrate Record Store Day by purchasing their favourite albums from local, independent shops.

“Its become the biggest day of the year after Boxing Day and it’s fantastic to see new people,” said Dave Kuzenko, owner of X-Ray Records.

Several decades ago, many people thought the passion for vinyl records would end. The cassette tape was introduced and vinyl sales took a sharp dive.

But for the past 15 years, local store owners say records have been making a major comeback.

“It’s on the rise. In the past few years, it’s really picked up,” explained Scott Gowen, owner of Beaumont Film and Records in Saskatoon.

“I think the reason why it is coming back is because people do get tired, kind of burn out trying to flick through their iPods – you’re not really engaged.”

“Vinyl sales have been going up, CD sales are down. It’s kind of funny how things come around. At least in here, vinyl is the dominant format again,” said Mike Spindloe, owner of The Vinyl Exchange.

Record store owners believe it’s more than just a trend.

“The superior sound is a big thing, it does sound better on vinyl, in my opinion,” said Gowen.

They hope to hear the click of the needle in households for many more years to come.
