More than 10,000 rare, collectible LPs are going for $1 a piece at this weekend’s Super Mega Records Garage Sale.

Records from four separate music collections are up for grabs, including hundreds from former Edmonton nightclubs The Roost and Flashback. Both locations were a big part of the city’s nightlife in the 1970s, 80s and 90s.

“Flashback and Roost… certainly referential institutions in Edmonton’s gay community and Edmonton’s club scene,” said Yuri Wuensch, who bought The Roost collection last fall.

The purchase practically doubled Wuensch’s collection overnight. After keeping several for himself, he decided to share the rest with other Edmonton collectors.

“I don’t want all the records, I just want the best ones,” he laughed. “I’m expecting quite a few people who attended both clubs to come out and participate and share their passion for the music.”

Dozens of people lined up for day one of the three-day sale Friday morning, all eager to get their hands on a piece of Edmonton’s music history.

“I’m looking for my past, in a box,” laughed Romeo Ripoli, who had already set aside 25 records after just 20 minutes of shopping.

“It’s fun to relive this time, the time represented by the records.”

Ava Karbonen, whose in-laws used to own The Roost, couldn’t help but stop by to check out the sale, also reliving her youth.

“We wanted to be here to pick up some nostalgia and memories and also just have some fun,” she said. “He had a really eclectic collection, so I just thought if I just do some random ones, we’ll take them back to the house and one night we’ll have a Roost party and drink cocktails and listen to vinyl.”

And that’s exactly what Wuensch envisioned when he decided to hold the garage sale.

“The value of a record isn’t always about the financial worth. Some people are going to come in here and pull out something that they’re really nostalgic about and I think that’s what’s important to me.”
