Residents living along Lake Manitoba fear strong winds predicted for this weekend may cause damage in the flood zone.

On Thursday, the province released a high wind alert for the east shore and southeast corner of the south basin of Lake Manitoba, including areas such as Twin Lakes Beach, St. Laurent and Lundar Beach.

Winds on Lake Manitoba reached 56 km/h Thursday and are forecasted to 27 km/hr through Friday morning.

The province says winds could pick up again to 37 km/h by Saturday.

“Waves are slamming in and splashing over dikes. In at least one case some sandbags have been knocked over, and a dike is now being repaired,” said Lundar Beach resident Noreen Duncan in a release.

She says the only thing saving homes and cottages are dikes – but it’s unclear how long they’ll hold out.

“They are still dry inside. In order to survive, we need the wind to drop dramatically, the level of the lake to go down,” said Duncan.
