A man is facing charges after a hit and run on the 5th Avenue fly-over that caused another driver’s car to roll over on its roof.

The crash happened Sunday, 2011 shortly after 8 p.m., when a 58-year-old man driving a 2008 Toyota Camry was travelling at a high rate of speed eastbound on the 5th Avenue fly-over.

The Camry rear-ended a Toyota RAV4 just before Memorial Drive, causing the SUV to roll over on its roof.

Despite sustaining heavy front end damage, the Camry fled the scene by running the red light at Memorial Drive, police say.

The driver continued fleeing north for a block before making his way over to southbound 4th Street N.E.

A bylaw officer and several citizen witnesses removed the driver from his car as he was stopped at another red light and held him for police.

The lone male driver of the RAV4 sustained minor injuries and was transported to the hospital by EMS, police say.

The driver of the Camry was arrested and is now facing charges of impaired driving causing bodily harm, criminal hit and run, and driving a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol content exceeding the legal limit.

He was uninjured in the crash.

A woman in the Camry was also uninjured, and she was taken into custody at the scene on outstanding arrest warrants.
