TORONTO – It didn’t take long for cartoons and internet memes to pop up online mocking the crushing defeat of the Parti Quebecois in the 2014 Quebec election.
The Liberals surged to a majority government as leader Philippe Couillard led his troops to a seemingly improbable and convincing win just a month after the election seemed like it was the PQ’s turn.
Marois took much of the heat on Twitter for her charter of values, which played prominently in the campaign.

Instead of shoring up more seats for a majority government of her own, Quebec’s first female premier is knocked out of office just 18 months after coming to power.
The sovereignty issue also irked many Quebecers who grew tired of the separation discourse even though the PQ leader admitted she later realized there was no appetite for a referendum in the near future.
The election cost Quebec taxpayers about $88 million. Some on social media wondered aloud whether it was all worth it.
A Quebec City weekly newspaper also cropped a photo one of her slogans “determinée” (determined) to become “terminée,” or finished, shown in the background.
Marois lost her own seat in Charlevoix-Côte-de-Beaupré Monday night.
Overall, it was not a happy night at PQ headquarters in Montreal.
