REGINA – The Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation hopes a new complaint website will reassure residents there is no conflict of interest when it comes to discipline.
The website lists the names of teachers who have had complaints filed against them as well as their scheduled hearing dates.
Executive director Gwen Dueck says they want processes in place that support teacher professionalism and transparency into the complaint process.

Residents can also file complaints through the site.
Committee decisions and punishments will also be posted.
Details behind a complaint are not published but Dueck said people can attend the public hearings if they want know more.
Other changes included improving tracking complaints that come in by phone and the creation of a professional complaints committee which will include two members of the public.

Last August, the Ministry of Education commissioned Dennis Kendel to study teacher regulation in the province and offer recommendations. His report recommended separating advocacy and discipline, because of a conflict of interest between the two. Both areas currently fall under STF jurisdiction.
“We continue to be in conversation with (the ministry) about teacher regulations processes in the province and look forward to ongoing communication with them in the coming weeks and months,” said Dueck.
