FREDERICTON – A hidden camera allegedly found in a men’s locker room at the Fredericton YMCA is under investigation by the city’s police force.

Questions were raised after the YMCA sent out an email to their customers Tuesday, informing them of a security breach. Fredericton police say the original complain came from a gym staff member, but they can’t release any other details because they claim it could harm the investigation.

Cameras can be used by businesses, but they have to follow very careful rules, like letting customers know they are there, says lawyer Mandy Woodland.

“Signs. Education around the fact that it’s being used. What it’s being used for. What’s being captured. Who’s watching it. What’s being done with the images that are recorded,” Woodland said.

“If I’m putting a video camera in my store to prevent thefts, that’s a different level of expectation of privacy than if I’m putting one in a washroom or a change room, or a place where people are expected to give up more personal information or be more exposed.”
