CALGARY- Terrible weather is to blame for a number of crashes that happened on the QEII north of Calgary on Thursday morning.
Airdrie RCMP say they were called to five collisions, including one near Crossfield that saw a southbound semi slide into the northbound lanes, narrowly avoiding a head-on collision with an oncoming SUV.
Just minutes later, another semi lost control in the same spot and nearly took out two northbound vehicles. One swerved into the ditch, while the other made minor contact with the semi. Incredibly, no one was injured.
As a result of the crashes, traffic was reduced to one lane for nearly two hours while the scene was cleaned up.
Despite the poor road conditions, officers saw a vehicle speeding near the scene at an alleged speed of 151 km/h—more than 40 km/h over the posted speed limit. The driver, a 68-year-old man from Calgary, has been issued a number of tickets as a result.
