WATCH: Accused killer said to be remorseful

KELOWNA, B.C. – The trial has begun for a Cherryville man accused of killing an Armstrong teen on October 31st, 2011.

Matthew Foerster is accused of beating Taylor Van Diest and leaving her to die along the rail tracks in the North Okanagan town.

The 18-year-old later died in hospital.

Foerster was charged with first degree murder.

Outside the courthouse Monday, Van Diest’s mother Marie expressed disappointment in the delay for justice.

“It should have started almost a year ago, so of course we’re highly relieved that things are finally under way,” says Van Diest.

The courtroom is packed with family and friends of the victim.

In their opening remarks, Crown Counsel stated the accused was remorseful, but didn’t elude to why.
