WorkSafe B.C. has a new video to spread its safety message thanks to a group of Penticton students.

Four students from Penticton Secondary School won first place in a provincial competition held by the organization to promote the hazards of hidden occupational exposures.

The theme for the 6th annual student safety video contest was “Overexposed! What you may not see can kill you”.

The award-winning video was created by Alex Greba, Pat Dones, Jordan Findlay and Jordan Dukakis.

The video is titled “Open your eyes” and features three teens who attempt to move around and work in a woodshop while blindfolded.

While blind, the teens try to handle saws and other power tools to little effect.

The video finishes with the caption “Working without knowing the dangers around you is ridiculous. So why would you do it? Keep informed about the dangers of workplace threats like asbestos, silica and dust”.

The winning team won $500 while Penticton High School received $2,000.

WorkSafe B.C. received 42 submissions from 19 schools across the province.
