California Governor Gavin Newsom says he’ll change all death sentences in the state to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
There are 548 people on death row in California. Newsom’s decision announced Thursday comes as he prepares to leave office after eight years.

In 2019 he placed a moratorium on executions in the state, but hundreds of people remained on death row.
According to the state constitution, the California Supreme Court’s approval is required to grant clemency to anyone convicted of a felony more than once.

“more to come” means they may or may not tell us that clemency only applies to 40% of the death row inmates because the other 60% have more than one felony.

The death penalty shouldn’t be used until we have an absolute standard of proof to go along with the absolute penalty. The criminal standard of beyond a reasonable doubt it high, but its not perfect. We’ve had people convicted of capital offences in Canada based on shoddy forensic evidence and shoddy eye witness evidence who were released years after (David Milgard, etc). They would likely have been executed if we had the death penalty. I think the family would probably want the right person punished.
