Watch: Surrey dog shelter owner stuck with a $14,448 hydro bill

Yuana Hexamer runs a not-for-profit dog rescue center in Surrey, which has saved over 600 dogs in less than ten years.

Every cent she spends goes towards her animals.

It’s a tight budget, but somehow she manages to pay her bills.

But Hexamer is now faced with a hydro bill amounting to a whopping $14448.93.

Hexamer says she pays her hydro bills online: about 200 dollars a month or 2,400 dollars a year.

In December, she got a catch-up bill to reflect actual rates.

In 2012, she owed only $170. Her fees for January and the catch-up bill for 2013 amounted to almost a hundred times that.

Hexamer says a service representative told her it would take 30 days to find out an answer.

She lives alone in a single home on her property.

Hexamder says she often uses her fireplace for heat and is sparing with her power.

There are two meters on her property, which is adding to the confusion.

One was switched out with a smart meter in 2012. The second — in 2013.

BC Hydro Spokesperson Simi Heer told Global News for most of last year Hexamer had an analogue meter.

“In August, we went out to do a meter read. And the meter reader entered the wrong numbers and that resulted in an erroneous meter reading and unusually high consumption being registered to this account.”
