Police are investigating Vancouver’s first pedestrian fatality of 2014.
The woman was struck in a crosswalk at West Hastings and Richards Street by a semi-truck at approximately 8 a.m. The truck was turning eastbound onto Hastings when the collision occurred. Witnesses immediately administered first aid until paramedics arrived.
She was immediately rushed to the hospital where she later died of her injuries. Police will not be releasing any details surrounding the victim’s identity until they’ve been able to notify her next of kin.
The driver of the semi-truck remained at the scene and is cooperating with police. According to Vancouver Police, they have not determined who was at fault for the accident.
The Vancouver Police Collision Investigation Unite will be at the scene throughout the day. The intersection at West Hastings and Richards Street is currently closed.
This is the city’s first pedestrian death of the year and comes just two days after the Vancouver Police Department announced a new plan to combat pedestrian injuries.
