Kelowna Rockets set franchise record

KELOWNA — The Kelowna Rockets defeated the Spokane Chiefs 3-1 on Wednesday night at Prospera Place, setting new franchise records for wins as well as points in a single season.

The Rockets win was the team’s 53rd of the year, breaking the record of 52, set last year by the Rockets.

“I’m really proud of the guys and I’m really happy for the coaches. They’ve committed so much time to this team and the kids are really listening to them,” says Rockets president/GM Bruce Hamilton. “We build our teams around having good kids and if you have that, your coaches have people to work with.”

Against Spokane, Nick Merkley scored twice and Jordon Cooke was outstanding in net as the Rockets shrugged off a 5-1 loss on Tuesday in Everett, returned to Kelowna and played an energized game to get back into the win column.

Myles Bell and Justin Kirkland each had a pair of assists and Madison Bowey also scored for the Rockets.

“That’s a lot of wins in one season and something our players should be proud of,” says Rockets head coach Ryan Huska. “Especially the way we did it. We got beat pretty bad last night and I thought our guys responded really well and competed hard tonight.”

The Rockets are back in action on Saturday against the Tri City Americans at Prospera Place.
