A heavy rainfall warning in the southern part of the province prompted Alberta Environment to issue high stream flow advisories for the Oldman River basin and the Milk River basin.

"There’s been quite a bit of rain already for the area," said Alberta Environment spokeswoman Carrie Sancartier. "With the additional rain, there is a possibility of flooding in the lower-lying areas."

On Monday, up to 47 millimetres had fallen in the Milk River basin and 10 to 20 mm fell in the southeastern slopes.

The following day, Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning predicting 50 to 70 mm of rain into Tuesday night for the Crowsnest Pass, Pincher Creek and Waterton Lakes National Park areas. Conditions are expected to improve by Wednesday afternoon.

High stream flow advisories are in place for the Oldman River Basin -which includes Lee Creek, Pincher Creek, Drywood Creek and Pothole Creek -and Milk River and its tributaries, as water levels continue to rise. The South Saskatchewan River basin remains under a high stream flow advisory, although water levels are falling.

Sancartier said the spring melt is adding to the rising water levels. She reminded residents in those areas to stay off and away from the riverbanks.
