Here’s the latest on the Milan Cortina Olympics

It’s the first full day of competition at the Milan Cortina Olympics, following Friday’s opening ceremony.

Here are the latest developments. All times Eastern.

5:24 p.m.

Daryl Watts scores Canada’s first even-strength goal to go ahead 4-0 against Switzerland in women’s hockey preliminary round play.

Sarah Nurse and Claire Thompson assisted on the goal, Canada’s third of the final period.

5:16 p.m.

Julia Gosling scored Canada’s third power-play goal to take a 3-0 lead over Switzerland late in the third period in women’s hockey action.

Erin Ambrose and Claire Thompson assisted on the goal.

5:00 p.m.

Canada’s women’s hockey team has gone up 2-0 over Switzerland early in the the third period thanks to a goal from Sarah Fillier.

It was another power-play goal for Canada, with Renata Fast and Daryl Watts assisting on the play.

4:15 p.m.

Canada’s women’s hockey team is now up 1-0 over Switzerland in the second period.

Natalie Spooner scored the power-play goal with an assist from Marie-Philip Poulin.

Canada has 22 shots on goal so far in the game, while the Swiss team has two.

3:15 p.m.

The puck has dropped between Canada and Switzerland in the women’s hockey preliminary round.

It comes after the entire Swiss team spent Friday night in isolation and skipped the opening ceremony after one player tested positive for norovirus.

Canada, the defending Olympic champion, had its opener against Finland postponed to Feb. 12 due to a norovirus outbreak on the Finnish team.

3 p.m.

Canada is in fourth place and heading into the figure skating team event finals after Toronto’s Stephen Gogolev finished third in the men’s short program.

Only the top-five countries in the 10-team event advanced to the final, which begins later tonight with the free dance.

Canada has 27 points heading into the final skates, behind the United States (34), Japan (33) and Italy (28).

2:55 p.m.

Valérie Maltais said her bronze medal reflected years of pushing herself and trusting the work behind her transition to long track speedskating.

“It was something I felt I could achieve,” said the La Baie, Que., native. “I’m really proud of the team around me that pushed me, made me uncomfortable, and made me train smart and hard. It led to a medal, and that’s a big achievement.”

Maltais’s result in the 3,000 metre delivered Canada’s first medal of the Milan Cortina Olympics and made her the first Canadian speed skater to win Olympic medals in both long track and short track.

Canadian snowboarder Francis Jobin, of Lac-Beauport, Que., has finished seventh in the men’s big air final with a score of 149.5.

Japan’s Kira Kimura won gold with a result of 179.5, followed by Ryoma Kimata’s 171.5.

China’s Su Yuming took bronze with a score of 168.5.

2:42 p.m.

Canada’s mixed curling team continues to struggle.

Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant of Chestermere, Alta., fell 8-6 to Estonia, their third straight loss at the tournament.

The defeat leaves Canada at 3-3 and puts its medal-round hopes in jeopardy.

2:35 p.m.

Norway’s Anna Odine Stroem has claimed gold in the women’s normal hill ski jump with 267.3 points.

Slovenia’s Nika Prevc won silver with a result of 266.2, followed by Japan’s Nozomi Maruyama’s 261.8.

Canada’s Abigail Strate, of Calgary, finished 11th in the final with a score of 240.4.

2:05 p.m.

Canadian figure skater Stephen Gogolev, of Toronto, has scored 92.99 in his short program in the mixed team event.

He’s currently ahead of Poland’s Vladimir Samoilov and Great Britain’s Edward Appleby.

Canada has 21 points overall in the team event, sitting in fourth place behind the United States, Japan and Italy.

1:54 p.m.

Canada’s mixed curling team is continuing to struggle.

Jocelyn Peterman and Brett Gallant of Chestermere, Alta., are down 6-2 at the halfway point of their game against Estonia.

A loss would drop Canada to 3-3 and diminish the chances of a spot in the medal round.

1:40 p.m.

The United States has come away with a 5-0 win against Finland in women’s hockey.

Hilary Knight scored to tie the U.S. Olympic women’s hockey career goal record.

The win comes after the Finnish team faced an outbreak of norovirus, prompting Olympic officials to postpone the team’s tournament opener against Canada to Feb. 12.

1:35 p.m.

The men’s big air snowboarding final has begun in Livigno, where Canada’s Francis Jobin is ranked eighth after his first run with a score of 37.25.

Japan’s Kira Kimura is currently ranked first with a score of 89.00, and defending champion Su Yiming from China sits second with a score of 88.25.

1:05 p.m.

Canada’s mixed doubles curling match against Estonia is now underway in Cortina.

Canadians Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman are looking to bounce back with a win after back to back losses to Great Britain and the United States.

Canada is currently fourth in the standings, tied with defending champion Italy.

12:15 p.m.

Women’s normal hill ski jumping is set to start shortly in Predazzo, where Canadians Natalie Eilers, Nicole Maurer and Abigail Strate will compete in the first round.

Meanwhile, the men’s single luge event is underway in Cortina, where Germany’s Max Langenham leads the way with a time of 52.924 after the first run.

11:20 a.m.

Canadian speedskater Valerie Maltais has claimed bronze in the women’s 3,000 metre race.

She finished at 3.56.93, behind Norway’s Ragne Wiklund at 3.56.54.

Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida has topped the podium with a time of 3:54.28.

11:10 a.m.

Canadian speedskater Valerie Maltais is in medal position after finishing second behind Italy’s Francesca Lollobrigida in the women’s 3,000 metre race.

Maltais finished at 3:56.93 behind Lollbrigida’s 3:54.28, with two more pairings to go.

Canadian Isabelle Weidemann is set to take the ice shortly.

10:40 a.m.

Canadian skiers are coming away from a pair of competitions without medals.

In men’s downhill, Toronto’s James (Jack) Crawford finished in ninth (1:53.00), while North Vancouver’s Cameron Alexander was 14th (1:53.49), Jeffrey Read of Canmore, Alta., finished 25th (1:54.56), and North Vancouver’s Brodie Seger placed 28th (1:54.96) in the field of 36.

Over in men’s slopestyle, Oakville, Ont.’s Evan McEachran will not advance to the final after placing 16th in the qualification round with a best score of 57.85.

7:30 a.m.

Switzerland says it is preparing to play today’s women’s hockey game against defending Olympic champion Canada despite a player testing positive for norovirus.

The entire Swiss team spent Friday night in isolation and skipped the opening ceremony.

Canada’s opener originally scheduled for Thursday was postponed to Feb. 12 due to a norovirus outbreak on the Finnish team.

7:25 a.m.

A team spokeswoman says Finland’s women’s hockey squad is cleared to play the United States after their tournament opener against Canada was postponed due to a norovirus outbreak.

The postponement of Thursday’s contest against the defending champions came as a result of Finland having 13 of its 23 players in quarantine. That game is now scheduled for Feb. 12.

There is no immediate word on how many players will be available for Finland today.

7 a.m.

Franjo von Allmen of Switzerland has won the first gold medal of the Milan Cortina Olympics in the men’s downhill.

Von Allmen raced down the slope in a time of 1 minute, 51.61 seconds, ahead of Italians Giovanni Franzoni and Dominik Paris who finished second and third, respectively.

Toronto’s James (Jack) Crawford finished ninth, while B.C. athlete Cameron Alexander was in 14th and Canmore, Alta’s Jeffrey Read finished 25th. Brodie Seger of North Vancouver was 28th.

6:30 a.m.

Two Canadian women have secured their spots in the women’s freestyle ski slopestyle final at the Winter Olympics.

Megan Oldham of Parry Sound, Ont., qualified in 7th, just one spot ahead of teammate Naomi Urness, from Mont-Tremblant, Que.

They’re among the 12 athletes who will compete for a medal in Monday’s final.

6:10 a.m.

Two-time Olympic medal-winning snowboarder Meryeta O’Dine has had to pull out of the Milan Cortina snowboard cross competition due to injury.

The Canadian Olympic Committee says O’Dine fell during a training session, and an X-ray confirmed she had fractured her ankle.

O’Dine, from Prince George, B.C., won bronze in both the women’s snowboard cross event and the mixed team snowboard cross event at Beijing 2022.

5:45 a.m.

Canada’s mixed doubles curling team has dropped a 7-5 decision to Great Britain.

Jennifer Dodds and Bruce Mouat jumped out to a 3-0 lead and never trailed in the round-robin victory over Brett Gallant and Jocelyn Peterman of Chestermere, Alta.

Gallant and Peterman will be back in action against Estonia in the evening session.
