WINNIPEG – It took longer than he would likely admit, but Blue Bombers rookie head coach Mike O’Shea has added to his defensive coaching staff, naming Gary Etcheverry defensive co-ordinator, Nelson Martin defensive backs coach and Mike Scheper defensive line coach.
Etcheverry brings over 30 years of coaching experience to the Bombers. He last coached in the CFL with the Saskatchewan Roughriders from 2008-10. Before that Etcheverry was on the staffs of the Ottawa Renegades, Toronto Argonauts and BC Lions.

A former player and Grey Cup Champion with the BC Lions in 1985, Nelson Martin worked alongside Etcheverry with the Renegades as a special teams assistant and the Roughriders as defensive backs coach. Martin coached the secondary of the Hamilton Tiger-Cats two years ago.
For the past two seasons Mike Scheper has been coaching the defensive line at Portland State University. He also worked alongside Etcheverry in 2009-10 as defensive line coach with the Roughriders.
The Blue Bombers still need to hire a coach for their linebackers and Cory McDiarmid’s name has been reported to be in line for that position. Mike O’Shea is also said to be still considering adding a quarterbacks coach to his staff.
