Crews are marking a milestone for the West LRT.

They laid the first piece of track Monday afternoon.

Officials warn with temperatures rising, the pace of construction will be ramping up, and commuters can expect more detours, traffic delays and dust.

The focus of the project is now on laying down all the track and building the line’s six new stations.

Despite the mess, people in the affected communities have been taking it all in stride, according to the city coucillor for Ward 6, Richard Pootmans.

"All businesses, residents, commuters driving the roads every day have all been incredibly supportive and patient with the construction during this phase."

Pootsman adds — "The summer will again be a dusty construction season. 17th avenue in particular will be experiencing delays, so we’re asking people to continue to show patience."

The city has hired street sweepers and watering trucks to control dust levels in the area.
