Two police officers rushed to hospital after collision

CALGARY – Two officers were rushed to hospital in serious condition and three others suffered minor injuries after a crash involving a police van and a pickup truck.

It happened around 6:30 p.m. on Thursday.

An unmarked 2009 Chevrolet Express police van with five members of the Police Emergency Response Team was headed westbound on Blackfoot Trail when the pickup truck, which was heading east, made a left-hand turn across the path of the police vehicle.

The driver of the police van lost control and hit a light standard, causing extensive damage to the vehicle.

The driver of the pickup truck also received minor injuries.

Police won’t say if the TAC Team was on its way to a call.

Officials say alcohol is not a factor in the collision, however, drivers’ actions are considered to be a factor.

Blackfoot, a major route for commuters, was quickly shut down in both directions, causing long back-ups of traffic as many Calgarians were making their way home from work.

The crash was the third serious motor vehicle accident in the area on Thursday.

Two people were killed in accidents earlier in the afternoon, including a woman who was struck by a van while crossing 10th Avenue SW, and the driver of a pickup truck who was killed when his vehicle crossed Highway 22, south of Cochrane, and collided head-on with a concrete truck.
