HALIFAX, N.S. – A grade 12 student from Halifax West High School is in police custody, accused of stabbing another student with a pair of scissors this morning.
The 17-year-old male is now charged with attempted murder.
The incident happened at 10:18 Monday morning during a change of classes.
A spokesperson for the Halifax Regional School Board says the male suspect allegedly stabbed the other student, in the shoulder and arm after charging into a classroom unexpectedly.
There was no prior incident that led up to the assault, Doug Hadley says.
The school’s principal was able to detain the student until police arrived.
The victim, also a 17-year-old grade 12 student, was taken to hospital for treatment and later released.
Hadley says the school immediately went into "isolation," requiring all students to report to the nearest classroom and stay put until further notice.
That was lifted approximately 40 minutes later and lessons went ahead as usual.
Students were obviously shaken up by the incident and, Hadley says, the school board would provide counselling if there is a need for it.
A previously planned parent-teacher night at Halifax West will go ahead as planned.
