Pedestrian lying on road struck, killed by vehicle in downtown Toronto

Toronto police say a man who was lying in the roadway has died after being hit by a vehicle in the downtown core on Wednesday.

Police said they were called to Shuter and Sherbourne streets at around 12:30 a.m. for reports of a pedestrian-involved collision.

The pedestrian, a 28-year-old man, was hit by a Ford Fusion being driven by a 43-year-old man going south on Sherbourne Street, police said.

Duty Insp. Jon Rose said emergency crews tried to save his life but he died from his injuries at the scene.

Rose could not confirm why the man was on the road or if he was unconscious or unhoused. He said investigators are looking into it.

“This is a heartbreaking incident and the circumstances around this are very sad,” Rose said.

Meanwhile, Rose said the driver did remain at the scene and is cooperating with investigators.

Sherbourne Street was closed between Shuter and Dundas streets but have since reopened.

Anyone with dashcam video of the area near the time of the incident is asked to contact police.
