Regina dog owners call for more off-leash parks

REGINA- If dogs could smile, you’d see a whole lot of toothy grins at the off-leash dog park.

Regina has one year round off-leash dog park, and during the summer the city transforms several outdoor hockey rinks into places where dogs can run freely and socialize with others.

But once the weather permits, those temporary parks are back to outdoor rinks, leaving only one place for dogs to play, near the intersection of 13th Ave and Lewvan Drive.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It’s a pain for residents travelling from the east-end to the west-end to get to the dog park,” said Lynda Schofield, with the Regina off-leash association. “And for those who have no transportation, the dog park isn’t even a possibility.”

In 2013, 10,219 dog licences were issued.

Councillor Mike O’Donnell has asked the city to look into adding an off-leash parks in new community developments that have a population of over 5,000 residents. A response is due this fall.

“When people have children, they meet at school. When people have dogs, they meet at the dog park,” said O’Donnell.

A second off-leash park is in the works for the Ross Industrial Park, but the timeline is uncertain.
