City still struggling to keep up with snow clearing

WINNIPEG — The city is struggling to clear away the unusual amount of snow that’s fallen this winter.

“We have done a much more significant amount of hauling this year than we would typically,” said Brad Sacher, the director of Winnipeg’s public works department.

Crews are working to clear sidewalks across the city however the weather is proving challenging, Sacher said.

“We’ve had situations where we’ve gone through, cleared a sidewalk, and the next day it has drifted in,” Sacher told Global News.

Plugged sidewalks have made work difficult for Ed Daquina, a Canada Post carrier. The majority of his route is snow-packed and not plowed.

“I hope they clean it pretty soon,” Daquina told Global News. “That is all I am asking.”

Vicki Johnson also made the same plea, but for her back lane windrows.

“It is actually quite terrible,” said the Elmwood resident. “It’s frustrating.”

The public works committee voted Tuesday in favour of having city administration look into the possibility of clearing windrows in back lanes.

Sacher said he has concerns about whether the city has the proper equipment for the job, finding a place to put the snow and cost.
