Inglewood residents use social media to fight noise from Alyth yard

CALGARY – Frustration is mounting among some Inglewood residents who complain noisy train work has continued at Canadian Pacific’s (CP) Alyth yard, despite a federal order for it to stop.

Last summer, the Canadian Transportation Agency (CTA) ordered CP to stop its locomotive testing and repair work between 11 p.m. and 7 a.m.

However, some say the noise continues despite that order – and they’re taking to social media to fight for a little peace and quiet.

“It’s full throttle idling,” complains Jen Bysterveld. “It’s revving your car engine up to full speed. But it’s a locomotive… it’s like a jet engine.”

A posting in the Inglewood community association’s newsletter is asking anyone woken up by noise at the rail yard to tweet with the hashtag #ShameOnYouCPrail.

Ward 9 Councillor Gian-Carlo Carra says he thinks his constituents have done an unbelievable job of exercising their rights.

“I think that keeping the pressure on is exactly what you want to do,” says Carra. “And I support them in that.”

CP rail says they no longer engage in locomotive testing or repair work overnight, but other operations do continue at all hours of the day.

They argue the ruling from the CTA fails to recognize that they need to operate 24/7, saying it restricts their ability to provide service in Calgary.

In September, CP rail announced they would be relocating their repair and maintenance centre, which will eliminate 130 positions.

“What [CP] is telling me is that they are in compliance right now, and that it’s all going to be moot anyway, because the entire locomotive servicing is [not going to be] in Calgary, it’s not going to be anywhere near here,” explains Carra. “And that does take a bit of time.”
