TORONTO – An inquest begins today into the death of a Toronto man following an altercation with police three years ago.
Charles McGillivary, 45, died in August 2011 after he was mistakenly arrested by police.
The developmentally challenged man who could not communicate with officers was out for a walk with his mother when police arrested him because he fit the description of another suspect they were searching for.
McGillivary was tackled to the ground and died after the episode triggered a pre-existing heart condition.
A Special Investigations Unit probe cleared the officers of any wrongdoing in the case.
The inquest, which is expected to last 10 days, hopes to make recommendations aimed at preventing future deaths.
