Feral colt rescued north of Calgary, others won’t be as lucky

CALGARY- A very lucky colt by the name of “Kai” is enjoying his new life on a ranch after he was rescued near Sundre just over a week ago.

When rancher Darrell Glover found Kai, the colt was emaciated and barely able to walk. He has since gained weight and made a full recovery.

The colt was part of a herd of feral horses, now approved for capture by the province.

At  least one permit has been issued for the capture of up to 25% of the wild horses in the Williams Creek area, southwest of Sundre.

Glover says he believes the cull is unnecessary.

“I fly over that valley frequently and I’ve been counting the horses myself,” he says.”I think there’s already been a high mortality rate,be cause of the floods and the deep snow and harsh winter.”

The province says a three-day count found 980 wild horses in Eastern Slopes area.

196 will be trapped; many of them will be sent for slaughter.

Thousands of people have signed a petition to stop the cull, but the province maintains it’s necessary to limit the damage to the environment.
