Snow grounds STARS, hampers EMS

Snow in the Calgary area has forced STARS to temporarily suspend its air ambulance service.

STARS made the decision after it was forced to refuse to respond to one call because of the weather.

It may resume service later Wednesday if the weather improves.

The snowy conditions also posed problems for EMS.  Several red alerts were issued Wednesday, because there were no ambulances available to respond to calls.

The red alerts were blamed on a higher-than-normal volume of calls due to the weather.

EMS says they were still able to meet the demand by sending out paramedics in S-U-V’s.
