Steve-O shares advice for Justin Bieber amidst pop star’s arrest

CALGARY – Jackass star Steve-O has shared some sage advice for Justin Bieber amidst the Canadian superstar’s recent run-ins with the law.

Bieber was arrested on Thursday morning on suspicion of driving under the influence, drag racing and driving with an expired license.

The arrest is the latest in a string of high-profile incidents for the 19-year-old pop star, which include having his house raided by police after he allegedly vandalized a neighbour’s home and being caught dashing out of a Brazilian brothel.

On Thursday, Global News interviewed comedian Steve-O in advance of several stand-up comedy performances scheduled at the Laugh Shop in Calgary.

When asked if he had any advice for Bieber, the 39-year-old star reflected on his own troubled past and what it took to set him straight.

“I don’t know if it ever makes sense to try and sort of preach or pressure people to do anything. I think a lot of time people have to have their own experience,” said Glover. “Certainly, the persuader for me was the mistakes that I made, and I’m super grateful for where I’m at today.”

Steve-O, whose real name is Stephen Glover, has been sober since 2008 after suffering through some psychiatric problems and pleading guilty to felony possession of cocaine.

The comedian actually credits his time in Calgary as a stepping stone in his reformation.

Glover was arrested at the Calgary International Airport in 2011 on an outstanding warrant for an alleged assault years earlier.

He was taken to jail, where he sat in a cell for several hours before being released.

“It made me so grateful, sitting in this jail cell and [seeing] everybody that was processed in there was covered in blood,” remembers Glover. “I just thought ‘wow, I really need to not get complacent, and protect my sobriety.’”

As for Bieber, Glover says all you can do is wait to see how things turn out.

“We’ll see what [Bieber’s] experience is, and just wish him luck,” he said.
