Saskatoon police deal with armed robberies, bear spray attack

SASKATOON – A number of crimes kept Saskatoon police busy over a five-hour period on Sunday.

It began around 5:55 p.m. after a taxi driver was robbed in the 300-block of Avenue H South.

The driver was assaulted by two people who attempted to steal cash and a cell phone before fleeing.

A canine unit tracked the suspects to a garage where they were arrested.

A 24-year-old man and 22-year-old woman are facing a number of charges including robbery.

Then around 9:15 p.m., police were called to an armed robbery at a business in the 600-block of 11th Street East.

A man threatened staff with a knife before fleeing with liquor and cash. A canine track was unsuccessful in locating him.

He is described as Caucasian, 5’7” with short hair, thin build and wearing a black hoodie, white ball cap, black pants and white shoes.

Around 30 minutes later, officers responded to a bear spray attack at a residence in the 300-block of Avenue R South.

A man rang the doorbell and when it was opened, he sprayed bear spray into the residence. Four adults, two children and an infant were inside.

Paramedics treated two adults and one child at the residence for bear spray contamination symptoms.

A canine track was unsuccessful in locating the man who is described as First Nations, 5’7”, thin build and dressed in black with a ball cap with green trim.

The final incident happened around 10:30 p.m. at a business in the 400-block of Confederation Drive where a man threatened another person with a knife.

Police arrived to find that a Loss Prevention Officer had been threatened when trying to apprehend a shoplifter.

The 26-year-old man was found a short distance away and has been charged with assault with a weapon and theft under $5,000.
