Mounties said they were called Saturday evening with the report of an attempted stabbing at a bus stop in the city, about 295 kilometres northeast of Edmonton.

The RCMP said officers found a male suspect armed with an “edged weapon,” and they “used their intervention options, including a firearm, to bring the subject into custody.”

The man was taken to hospital, where he died of his injuries.

No one else was injured.

The brother of the man who died has identified him as 41-year-old Matthew Atkinson.

Farron Atkinson told Global News that he wants to see video of the incident and questions why lethal force was used.

“I just want truth for my family,” he said, adding that Matthew was a father of two and that he loved his family.
