Family, neighbours frightened by carjacking

WINNIPEG – A woman stabbed for her keys while she swept snow off her car Wednesday had to grab her seven-year-old out of her Honda Accord before the thief took off in it.

Parmjit Kaur, 30, put her daughter in her car on Marbury Road in the Maples shortly after 6 a.m. and started sweeping the snow off the vehicle, police said.

While she was clearing the car, a man came up and demanded her keys.

She refused to hand them over and he stabbed her in the lower body while taking her keys.

She got her daughter out of the car before the thief drove off in it. The vehicle was last seen headed south on Marbury.

The mom suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said. She wasn’t available to speak Thursday, but family members and neighbours said they were terrified by the incident.

“It was scary,” said daughter Komalpreet Kaur.

Cousin Surinder Mallhi added, “My wife is also scared because it’s crazy.”

Neighbours were unsettled by the theft.

“When we heard, we are really scared, because we have little kids, too,” said Muzamil Hussain. “We want to be safe in Canada. That’s why we came here.”

The family has since taken some security precautions, including changing the locks on the house since the robber got away with all the woman’s keys.

The man was about 40 years old, tall, with a skinny build and a small moustache, police said. He was wearing a white jacket that may have had yellow and other colours on it.

The car is a green four-door 1998 Honda Accord with the Manitoba licence plate GMX 393.
