As the economy continues to recover and the construction industry begins to plan for future growth, the province is making a big change to the way trades operate.
Previously, many trades were only allowed to hire one apprentice for each journeyperson. Effective immediately, that ratio is changing to allow two apprentices for each journeyperson.
The goal is to provide more opportunities for young workers, and build a skilled workforce to replace thousands of older workers expected to retire in the next decade.
"We’ve been working at this for a number of years." Don Muth of Muth Electrical said on Thursday. "Finally the Alberta government has done the right thing and allow this thing to happen, which just continues our Alberta advantage."
The change affects most skilled trades including electricians, carpenters, plumbers and ironworkers.
