“Snowshoe Grind” opens at Grouse

Missing the Grouse Grind?

Aficionados of the popular North Shore trail, which gets mobbed in the summer time, can stop fretting.

Grouse Mountain is now offering a cold-weather alternative to the gruelling hike with a new “Snowshoe Grind,” which opens Wednesday.

The challenging 4.3-kilometre alpine trail starts from the Peak Chalet, adjacent to the Skyride ramp, and continues through a marked route to the summit of Dam Mountain before looping back to the chalet.

It’s a longer route compared to the original Grind’s 2.9 kilometres, but with an elevation gain of 215 metres, it is not as steep as the Grind, which climbs about 850 metres from the base to the top.

Winter grinders can also time themselves using the Grind Timer, which has been relocated to the alpine area.

Snowshoers can scan the $20 timer card at the beginning and at the end of the hike. Their completion times will be recorded and posted.

The trail was selected so that Snowshoe Grind times would be similar to Grouse Grind times, said resort officials.

It should take an average of one hour to complete.

However, unlike the Grouse Grind, which is free, the Snowshoe Grind can only be accessed with a Ski and Snowboard Pass, general admission ticket, or annual membership to Grouse Mountain.

The Snowshoe Grind will be open during daylight hours every day in the winter.
