EDMONTON – Two Edmonton officers have been charged with assault.

The charges stems from a complaint that Cst. Barry Fairhurst and Cst. David Olsson used excessive and unlawful force during an arrest they made Sept. 4, 2012.

Fairhurst has been with the Edmonton Police Service (EPS) for nine years; Olsson is a two-year member. The constables remain assigned to their regular duties.

The charges were laid against them Monday following an investigation by the EPS Professional Standards Branch, and a review by Alberta Justice.

Since the matter is before the courts, the EPS is not releasing any more information about the case.
