Melting snow and ice present water risks for Moncton homeowners

MONCTON – With temperatures rising, Moncton homeowners are taking precautions to keep snow water from flooding their homes.

Nadine Lipton said when she saw snow melting around her homes, she grabbed her shovel.

“There was probably a half a foot of water in front of the garage and there was four feet of snow on the back patio which was all leaning against the patio door,” she said. “It all had to be removed before the temperatures got warmer.”

Lipton said snow has damaged her home in the past, and this time she removed what should could from around her home.

“We had to take extensive measures to remove everything,” she said. “Take it off the roof, take it off the patio, push the water all the way from the garage. You never know where the water’s going to come in,” she said.

Dan Connors, a plumber and home renovator with Dan’s Plumbing and Renovation, said the warm weather has kept him busy responding to water emergencies.

“When we have a big thaw and we have a lot of snow, it goes places and melts down into water, [then the] water goes places we have no control over,” he said.

Connors said simple measures, like cleaning eavestroughs, can keep homeowners dry.

“Roofs this year are probably our number one concern, and the biggest reason is ice damming,” he said. “It will crawl up into your roof area then down your interior walls and end up in your basement or different areas of your house.”

He said homeowners also shouldn’t forget to inspect their windows — bad caulking around the edge and worn weather stripping can let in water that will cause problems.

As for Lipton, she said acting fast is also key to keeping your home waterproof.
