Saskatoon housing starts down from 2012

SASKATOON – Housing starts in the Saskatoon census metropolitan area (CMA) fell significantly last year, according to preliminary numbers released by Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC).

Saskatoon began construction on 2,980 units in 2013 while 3,753 units were started the previous year.

In December 2013, there were 85 single detached homes and 94 multiple family units started in the Bridge City CMA. Forty-one more units were started in December 2012.

The City of Saskatoon issued building permits valued around $1.1 billion in 2013. This exceeded the record total generated in 2012 but fell short in numbers.

For Saskatchewan, total urban starts were at 7,258 in 2013 down from 7,941 in 2012.

Regina’s CMA starts increased slightly in 2013 on a year-over-year basis.

CMHC’s preliminary housing starts for Canada last year were at 170,134 compared to 193,563 units in 2012.
