TORONTO — Hilary Duff and her Canadian husband Mike Comrie announced Friday they have separated.

A rep for the 26-year-old singer/actress and the 33-year-old ex-NHLer said in a statement the split was a mutual decision and they will “remain best friends and will continue to be in each other’s lives.”

Duff and Comrie, who were married in August 2010, welcomed son Luca in March 2012.

“They are dedicated to loving and parenting their amazing son,” the statement said.

Duff tweeted on Friday: “Not an easy day but we’re getting thru it together.”

Duff and Comrie met in 2007 while vacationing in Idaho with mutual friends. In 2010, she told The Globe and Mail: “I called my mom the next day and said, ‘I think I have a crush on somebody.'”

Duff told Cosmopolitan in 2008: “I’m definitely not ready to get married! I think a reason that people in this business get married young is that they feel like everything comes to them sooner in life. It’s normal to be like ‘Okay, what’s next?'”

Last September, Star magazine reported that Duff and Comrie started attending couples therapy in February in hopes of saving their marriage.

Comrie, whose father and uncles founded The Brick retail chain, played in the NHL for 13 years before retiring in February 2012. He played twice for his hometown Edmonton Oilers as well as the Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders, Pittsburgh Penguins, Phoenix Coyotes and Philadelphia Flyers.

Duff was in Toronto in early December to promote a brand of batteries.
