The Waterloo Region District School Board said on Thursday that it was under the direction of Waterloo Regional Police.

“We are conducting an investigation in the area and, as a result, the school has been placed in a hold and secure as a safety precaution,” a police spokesperson told Global News in an email.

Within 10 minutes of the initial announcement, the WRDSB announced that the hold and secure had been lifted.

Later in the afternoon, the police spokesperson said a gun-related call about a potential shooting at the Kitchener Market led to the hold and secure.

“The caller indicated they intended to bring a gun to the area of the market and start shooting,” they said.

“Through investigation, police determined the caller was from out of country and that this was a swatting call.”

Swatting refers to a false report made to police that intends to lure a large number of officers to a particular location, often with the intention of targeting specific individuals.

On May 30, the school was placed under a hold and secure after police received a threatening phone call early in the morning.

A day earlier, they received a similar call about St. Mary’s High School which left the school closed for two days.
