Two men sentenced in connection with River Cree death in 2008

Two men convicted of second degree murder in the shooting death of Mohammed Ibrahim have now learned how much time they will spend in jail for the crime.

In November, Alexander Reid and Adam Brown were convicted in Ibrahim’s death. The 24-year-old Somali man was shot and killed outside the River Cree Casino in August of 2008.

Court heard during trial that the shooting was retaliation from a bar fight that happened inside the casino earlier that evening.

A second degree murder conviction comes with an automatic life sentence, but on monday, court heard arguments over how long the men should serve before being eligible for parole.

The crown is asked for 15-20 years, while the defence asked for 12 years. The judge ultimately ruled that the pair will serve 17 years before being eligible for parole.

Reid did not speak in court during the sentencing, but Brown did, and maintained his incense.
