SaskPower giving Boundary Dam multi-million dollar facelift

SaskPower’s largest generating station is set to get a multi-million dollar facelift.

The Crown Corporation plans to invest $354 million into the modernization of Unit 3 at the Boundary Dam Power Station. The unit has been generating power for 45 years, and was scheduled to shut down in 2013. This investment will extend its life by 30 years.

“We are pleased to be moving forward with a project that will provide a major boost to the provincial economy, lay the groundwork for greener energy, and help ensure Saskatchewan has a secure supply of power,” said Rob Norris, Minister responsible for SaskPower.

Boundary Dam has been identified as the site of an integrated carbon capture and storage system. This upgrade is not part of that project, which has a price tag of $1.2 billion. SaskPower will defer a final decision on that project until new federal emissions regulations are determined.
