At about 7:20 p.m., police say a driver cut off another driver on 50th Street in front of the City Centre Mall.

Both vehicles pulled into a parking lot at 6207 – 50th St. where a “physical confrontation occurred,” RCMP said in a news release Thursday morning.

A 42-year-old man was stabbed during the confrontation, according to police.

The man was seriously injured and taken by ground ambulance to a local hospital.

RCMP said the suspect remained at the scene and provided first aid to the victim until police and EMS arrived.

“Aggressive driving and road rage are extremely concerning,” said Const. Cheri-Lee Smith, a Leduc RCMP public information officer. “They can have serious, long-lasting effects.

“All drivers have an expected responsibility when they are behind the wheel.”

Smith said any driver who encounters an aggressive driver on the road should take a different route, try to get away from the driver, not engage with the other driver, try to get a good description of the vehicle and licence plate, and call 911 when it’s safe to do so.

“Being on the road is hazardous enough,” she said. “Any distractions can pose risks to not only to the driver of that vehicle but everyone else around them. Taking the extra precautions, staying off your phone, staying calm and alert, those are things that all the drivers on the road should be aware of and keeping in mind.”

The suspect, whose name has not been released, has been charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon.
