REGINA – Photo identification will now be required to vote in all levels of Saskatchewan elections, including municipal.
The government has introduced changes similar to what’s already in place in Ontario and B.C.
Municipal Affairs Minister Darryl Hickie doesn’t think the changes will put too much of a burden on municipalities given that it has been discussed with many groups.
It was the larger cities that requested the change.
It was announced in the Throne Speech, but until now it was thought it was optional for municipalities.
There is some flexibility – if a voter doesn’t have photo identification, two pieces of ID with confirmation of name and address will be good enough.
