UPDATE: Father and son killed after plane crash on B.C. coast

A father and son from Alberta have been killed after their plane crashed off the west coast of Vancouver Island Saturday afternoon, according to Mounties.

Search crews located the wreckage of the twin-engine Cessna 421 B Sunday at 9:25 a.m. in a treed area on the south side of Vargas Island.

The victims have now been identified as Mike Van Den Burg and his father Jurri.

The father and son were flying from Lethbridge to Tofino, with a stop in Abbotsford, when the plane vanished from radar as it was preparing to land at around 3:30 p.m.

RCMP, the coast guard and search and rescue crews conducted a search immediately, but it was called off because of heavy fog and bad weather.

The search resumed Sunday morning at 7 a.m. and the plane was found shortly after in a large crater, prompting investigators to believe there was an explosion upon impact.

Tofino RCMP and the BC Coroners Service were on site Sunday afternoon. The Transportation Safety Board is also investigating.

The identities of the two victims have not been released as next of kin is still being notified.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
