Highway 33 reopened following collision closure between Kelowna and Big White Ski Resort

UPDATE: A section of Highway 33 that was closed between Kelowna and Big White Ski Resort because of a vehicle collision has reopened.

Kelowna RCMP say the collision involved multiple vehicles and that it happened around 1 a.m., with the highway being closed in both directions for nearly 10 hours.

The collision was around 12 km east of Kelowna, in the Joe Rich neighbourhood.

Around 10:45 a.m., DriveBC reported that Highway 33 was reopened to traffic, but that motorists should watch for crews as clean-up efforts continue.

ORIGINAL STORY:

An overnight, multiple-vehicle collision has closed a section of Highway 33 east of Kelowna.

Police say the closed section is between Peregrine and Philpot roads, and that the accident happened just before 1 a.m.

According to DriveBC, the full highway closure is between 11 and 14 km east of Kelowna, in the Joe Rich area.

“Due to the severity of this collision and the on-going investigation, the RCMP are advising that Hwy 33 has been closed in both directions until this part of the investigation has been concluded,” police said Saturday morning.

If you have to travel between Kelowna and the small community of Rock Creek — which includes Big White Ski Resort and Beaverdell — police say the only route is a lengthy detour via Highway 97 through Osoyoos.
