ATCO crews go door-to-door in Kensington after gas line break

CALGARY – ATCO crews spent hours going door-to door in two northwest neighbourhoods on Thursday night, checking that furnaces were working after a gas line ruptured earlier in the day.

It happened around 9 a.m. in the 200 block of 11 Street N.W., forcing fire crews to evacuate 19 homes as a precaution.

In addition, ATCO had to shut off gas to hundreds of houses as they worked to repair the ruptured gas line.

After the line was fixed, ATCO crews joined police and firefighters to go door-to-door helping people re-ignite their furnaces.

Officials managed to visit almost all 400 homes in Kensington and Hillhurst that were impacted by 11:30 p.m.

Crews left notices on the three houses they were unable to get inside.

ATCO says a home can be without heat for up to 48 hours before water pipes are in danger of freezing.

Residents are taking the rupture, and the fallout, in stride.

“It’s an inconvenience,” says homeowner Carol Bondaroff. “But after the floods this is small. Our whole street was affected by the flood; it was a three-day evacuation and this was only for the morning.”

ATCO was also kept busy dealing with another gas line rupture on Crowfoot Terrace N.W. on Thursday afternoon.

More than 140 homes and 90 businesses were affected,

That break has also been repaired.
